Get The Reel Scoop;
comparing movies to books Reader's Theater lesson plan Sharon Roth This lesson takes advantage of the phenomenon of film versions of literature by asking students to compare and contrast books with their movie counterparts. The process of comparing and contrasting teaches students to think critically about different forms of media presented to them. Students first read a book and analyze the literary elements of the text. They then watch the film version, using a graphic organizer to compare elements of the book and film versions. Next, they discuss which changes they think improved the book and which changes they think were a bad idea. Finally, they select a scene from the book that they think wasn't well represented in the movie and adapt it for a readers theater performance. |
Recording Readers Theatre: Developing Comprehension and Fluency With Audio Texts
Deborah Kozdras, Ph.D. James L. Welsh With so many different kinds of texts available to students—from traditional books to podcasts and videos—it is important for teachers to explore various ways of developing students' comprehension skills. This lesson adapts Guided Comprehension as a model to scaffold students' listening comprehension. Students investigate audio texts of mystery stories and evaluate them in terms of both literary and audio qualities. Finally, students create Readers Theatre scripts, which they use to record their own podcasts using vocal qualities and sound effects to add meaning to the text. |
Reading Idol! Bringing Readers Theatre Center Stage in Your Classroom
Jennifer M. Nelson Students have an opportunity to create an outstanding Readers Theatre performance within groups to compete for the title of Reading Idol. Students are given scripts to practice their roles within Readers Theatre. Throughout the week, groups practice repeatedly until the performance day. On the performance day, students take turns performing and evaluating their own work and the performances of other groups before voting on a winning performance. All groups are required to create a podcast of their performance. The Reading Idol winners are also recorded by video and uploaded to the teacher’s website for others to view. |
